the Foursquare church
Our church has strong roots in a family of churches called “Foursquare”. Foursquare comes from a term coined around the start of the twentieth century that means even or balanced. The first Foursquare Church was started in Los Angeles in 1923 by a Canadian woman named Aimee Semple McPherson, who had spent years as a traveling preacher helping people see that God loves them, and wants them to enjoy a life with Him through the forgiveness and life of Jesus Christ. (At her church in LA they were the biggest distributor of food during the Great Depression in the area, had the first religious radio station, and worked with people in the movie industry for messages that connected with people in innovative and memorable ways.)
Though we use the term “denomination” to describe an organization or network of churches, it was never Sister Aimee’s heart to call us that—she called us a MOVEMENT because we were supposed to work with other believers in Jesus Christ to moving to make the world a better place.
There are four “squares” in Foursquare that unite us—an even, holistic way of seeing who Jesus is: Savior, Baptizer of the Holy Spirit, Healer and Soon Coming King.
We are about aligning our lives with Jesus and helping others to do the same. As we excitedly step further into the 21st century we are excited to have roots in a movement started by a woman immigrant and has sought to help people with the word of God and the love of Jesus in real, practical ways. When we give to helping in the wake of global tragedies, we give through Foursquare Disaster Relief, who have boots on the ground to directly help in these catastrophes and tragedies within days, and sometimes hours. It is a safe, tested, trusted way to help.
We are thankful for our Foursquare roots and they shape who we are and how we look to positively impact the world—locally and globally. There are Foursquare churches all over the world, with the highest concentration being in California.
